Our fall looks gorgeous, but it’s wet, windy, and full of hungry deer. Here’s how to style a porch that holds up through Halloween and doesn’t become a buffet.
1) Start with a simple color plan
Pick two base colors (e.g., charcoal and cream) + one accent (rust, moss, or navy). Keeping the palette tight makes even small stoops feel designed.
2) Layer the welcome zone
- 24–30″ coir mat on top of a 2×3’ outdoor rug for scale
- Tall lantern on one side; medium planter on the other for balance
- Wreath that’s ⅔ the width of your door glass (faux holds up to rain)
3) Deer-resistant container recipe
Skip edibles like kale or ornamental cabbage—deer love them. Try:
- Thriller: purple fountain grass or red switchgrass
- Filler: heuchera (coral bells), autumn fern
- Spiller: ivy (often ignored), trailing sedge
Use resin or fiberglass planters; they’re lighter and don’t crack.
4) Weather-smart textiles
Use outdoor pillows/throws labeled solution-dyed acrylic or olefin. Shake off rain and let them breathe on a hook inside your entry on storm days.
5) Lighting for early dusk
- Warm-white (2700–3000K) LED lanterns or battery candles with timers
- A slim plug-in spotlight angled up at your wreath or stonework adds drama
- If you upgrade sconces, choose dark-sky rated fixtures to reduce glare
6) Add personality (fast)
- House numbers in matte black
- A boot tray for muddy soccer cleats
- One statement pumpkin group—real or resin—tucked by the jamb
