Layered lighting + smart shades make rooms brighter and more energy-efficient during our long gray season.
The 3-layer rule
- Ambient: ceiling fixtures on dimmers
- Task: lamps, under-cabinet LEDs, reading sconces
- Accent: picture lights, uplights behind plants, cove LED
Bulb guide (simple)
- Color temp: 2700–3000K in living/sleep areas; 3000–3500K in kitchens/offices
- High CRI (90+) makes paint and skin tones look better
Window treatments that work
- Dual shades: sheer for day privacy, lined for night warmth
- Thermal drapes in bedrooms; hang high, just brushing the floor
- Add a reflective film on south-facing sliders to reduce glare but keep brightness
Local Notes
- If you’re swapping many fixtures, consider an electrician to check load/dimmers.
- Energy rebates may exist for LED upgrades—worth a quick check.
